Kaela will share practical tips on cultivating healthy, thriving roses in the hot and humid Southern climate—all without the use of pesticides. About the Speaker: 

Kaela Miller is the Plant Collections Coordinator at Brookgreen Gardens and a former Zoo Horticulturist with a deep-rooted passion for conservation and education. With undergraduate degrees in marine science and biology, along with a graduate degree in teaching, she brings a dynamic perspective to the relationship between plants and wildlife. Her expertise in conservation ecology drives her commitment to native plants and their vital role in sustaining healthy ecosystems. Kaela’s work bridges the gap between horticulture and habitat preservation, making her an invaluable resource for those eager to learn about the natural world. 

Join Brookgreen Gardens Horticulturist Jason Flynn for an insightful autumn tour of the South Carolina Native Plant Garden, nestled around the Heron, Grouse, and Loon sculpture. Discover the ecological value and beauty of native plants as Jason explores seasonal highlights, plant care strategies, and the differences between native and non-native species. The tour will also include a look at the unique features of the South Carolina Geologic Garden and an overview of native garden design techniques. Jason will share behind-the-scenes details about maintaining this dynamic landscape and reveal exciting plans for a new addition to the garden. Don’t miss this opportunity to deepen your appreciation for the vital role native plants play in our ecosystems.  

About the Speaker: 

Jason Flynn graduated with a bachelor's degree in environmental studies and a lifelong interest in understanding the interconnections found within the natural and manmade world. As a horticulturist at Brookgreen Gardens, he was responsible for creating the South Carolina Geologic Garden. In addition, he cares for the native garden, a display of plants that grow in the wild of South Carolina, with ecologically friendly practices. Jason also cares for Bethea's Garden, an organic vegetable garden that utilizes sustainable practices, and has a strong emphasis on educating on the diversity of vegetables grown in the South and their importance to a healthy community and ecosystem.   

Recent Acquisitions will include works added to the Brookgreen Gardens collection since 2018. These include objects from the collections of the National Sculpture Society, the family of Leonda Finke, Tuck and Janice Langland, Peggy McNeil, the family of Nathaniel Kaz, and more great artwork and historic objects.

Spring/Summer 2020 Collection by Susan Albright

Susan will be presenting her new line of original designs for the current season. Feminine, casually elegant, comfortable dresses and tops made from organic cotton designed and sewn in the lowcountry.  Visit her website to see more of her designs.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the use of a simple face covering slows the spread of the virus and prevents those who unknowingly have the virus from transmitting it to others.  We encourage use of such face coverings.

Parking will be in the Work Horse field, just across from the Leonard Pavilion. Handicapped parking is available in the Lowcountry Center paved parking lot.

Join our Horticulturist, Luiz Nascimento, for a tour of two garden sections:

• Harvest Living Wall and Annual Border: Luiz will explain the process, preparation and planting of this seasonal annual display including over 500 plants. 

• Four Corners: Luiz will discuss how we transformed this area into a shade perennial ornamental border including some native plants. 

About the Speaker: Luiz Nascimento  

Luiz is the Manager of Horticulture at Brookgreen Gardens. He has a background in landscape management and operations. 

Join Richard Costa for an insightful bird walk, meandering along the creek and Gardens, where he expertly identifies various avian species amidst the lush surroundings. Don't forget to bring your binoculars to fully immerse yourself in this experience. After the walk, indulge in conversation over freshly brewed coffee and donuts, adding a delightful conclusion to your morning exploration.

About the Speaker: 

Richard Costa is a former dentist turned elementary science teacher. He has been a birder for 40 years, gaining his experience in Cape May, NJ, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and the Low Country of SC. He retired to Murrells Inlet and is also a birding volunteer at Huntington Beach State Park.
