Southern Pottery Traditions and the Face Jug, with Donald Cate

 

Don will discuss the evolution and history of pottery manufacture in the southern states of South Carolina, Georgia, and North Carolina. Methods, glazes, and some major makers/families will be discussed. Utilitarian, figurative, and art pottery will be covered including actual examples from his collection. Specific attention will be given to Face Vessels or Face Jugs which were introduces in Edgefield, SC by African Slave Potters and whose history goes back thousands of years. Various examples, their characteristics, and uses will be presented.
