Authors Sally Z. Hare and Jim R. Rogers believe that fostering the next generation of readers is one of the most important roles for parents, grandparents, and teachers. Reading not only builds knowledge but also teaches empathy, broadens cultural perspectives, and invites playful exploration of language.
Sally, with an academic background in literacy and early childhood education, deeply understands the importance of reading to children. Jim, who wrote his first children’s book at age 90, brings a unique perspective on lifelong creativity.

About the Speaker:
Sally Z. Hare is a lifelong teacher, learner, feminist, activist, and passionate steward of the planet. She is the Coastal Carolina University Singleton Distinguished Professor Emerita and president of Still Learning, Inc. Sally served for over a decade as Dean of the Graduate School at Coastal Carolina University. Her work has taken her across diverse cultures and communities, exploring the meaning and power of community.
Jim R. Rogers is a native North Carolinian from the small town of Tabor City, where he fondly recalls experiencing a “Norman Rockwell childhood.” Over the next 40 years, Jim’s career took him to Korea, Charlotte, Atlanta, New York, and Los Angeles, working successfully in advertising, radio, television, film, and commercial production before returning to the Southeast to pursue new paths.
Jim is a nationally certified parenting and family life educator. Over a 30-year span, Jim led parenting workshops across the region and served as a parenting educator at Coastal Carolina University’s Center.
Remarkably, Jim wrote his first children’s book, Bark! Bark! Bark in the Dark, at age 90. At age 77, he published his first book of poetry, Starts and Stops Along the Way, which inspired the play Geriatric Monologues that he produced and directed at Piccolo Spoleto in 2018. He is also the author of The Incredible Importance of Effective Parenting and another poetry collection, Looking Around.
