Join us for the launch of a new public program at Brookgreen Gardens. We have been collecting living history narratives about Gullah Geechee community members of Sandy Island, Plantersville, and Murrells Inlet that will be dramatized and complemented with digital elements. On Saturday, June 19, in recognition of Juneteenth, presentations of “Seen, Heard, Esteemed: Living History Narratives of Georgetown County” will be shared to pay homage to freedom.

At both 11:00 am and 1:00 pm in the Leonard Pavilion, Ron Daise will present the following:

“The Sensibilities of Freedom” – an excerpt of the Brookgreen U lecture from June 18

“Lessons Learned about Freedom” – Remarks by Coastal Carolina University students and staff who conducted research for the “Seen, Heard, Esteemed” program

“The Importance of Freedom”/Introduction of the “Seen, Heard, Esteemed” program

Guests can visit the listening stations near the Lowcountry Center. The tour can also be found on the Brookgreen app, where all the narratives can be heard.

Produced in partnership with The Charles Joyner Institute for Gullah and African Diaspora Studies and the Athenaeum Press at Coastal Carolina University, this exhibit has been partially funded by a generous grant from South Carolina Humanities, the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation and the National Archives.
