“When a flower doesn't bloom, you fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower.” -Alexander Den Heijebasic
Traditional construction practices in North America have increasingly been stripped of their original essence and effectiveness, resulting in negative impacts on occupant health and planetary well-being. Early architects drew inspiration from nature. These architects mimicked patterns in shells, snails, and honeycombs to create harmonious structures.
This nature-inspired approach has guided human innovation—from sundials to energy-efficient building designs. By recreating nature’s shapes, systems, and ecosystems, we can build homes and spaces that are healthier, more sustainable, and more connected to the environment and local culture.
In this lecture, you will learn how to incorporate these harmonious design philosophies into your own space—working with nature as your guide.
