Join us at Brookgreen Gardens for a workshop inspired by traditional embroidery and the botanical beauty of coastal South Carolina. In this session, participants will create their own stitched depiction of the iconic Southern Magnolia—one of the most beloved plants found throughout the gardens and region. Guided by their instructor, attendees will learn basic cross-stitch techniques, explore how to translate floral subject matter into thread, and discover the significance of the flower. Suitable for beginners and seasoned stitchers alike, this workshop offers a relaxing, creative way to explore local flora and bring home a handmade textile keepsake rooted in American craft and the landscape of South Carolina.

Advance registration is required, and space is limited. Workshops are subject to cancellation if minimum enrollment is not met. In the event of cancellation, participants will be notified and refunded.

Please bring a snack or lunch.

About the Instructor:

Nellie Grey Eckert (she/her) was born in Durham, North Carolina, where she spent her childhood convincing others to call her by her middle name. After graduating from Coastal Carolina University with a BA in studio art, a BA in graphic design, a minor in photography, and a minor in art history, Grey attended the University of South Carolina, where she earned an MFA in studio art. She currently teaches at Coastal Carolina University. Her fiber-based work investigates the chronic disdain that stereotypically feminine interests — ‘craft’ art, love stories, and Taylor Swift — face.
