Beginning Sculpting Workshop

This week's sculpture workshop at Brookgreen Gardens Campbell Sculpture Studio was titled "Beginning Sculpting," and the students ranged from 14 to 80 years old! Of the nine students, only two have had a sculpture class or lesson before. Their reasons for taking the class were varied from needing more sculpting skills wanting a departure from their everyday routine to a lifelong visitor's awe of sculpture in the Gardens and learning from Bryan Rapp, the Director of the Master Sculptor program.

Bryan teaches techniques on anatomy, posing the armature (aluminum stick figure), sculpting from observation, and recreating what is seen from the live model. He also worked with students individually on bone structure, muscle definition, and working with natural light.

Mrs. Barbara Klaris of Mt. Pleasant, SC, has been looking for sculpture workshops in Charleston but hadn't found any. She heard of ours and signed up. Because of Bryan's teaching and this class, she's also signed up for two more workshops this year - Sandy Scott and Trish Smith. She's originally from California and was involved with The Huntington Library in San Marino.
