Rosa 'New Dawn' was discovered by Somerset Rose Nursery in the United States as a sport of Rosa 'Dr. W. Van Fleet'. It is a large-flowered climber rose and has the coveted designation of being an Earth-Kind® Rose, meaning it has superior disease resistance and is an excellent landscape plant.

Rosa 'New Dawn' was the first plant to ever be patented.

At Brookgreen Gardens, roses are rarely sprayed for fungal, insect, or other environmental pressures or problems. The Poetry Garden at Brookgreen Gardens is maintained as a completely spray-free rose garden, favoring the use of disease resistant roses and proper cultural practices.
