Acer palmatum 'Hefner's Red' was found as a chance seedling at Hefner's Nursery in North Carolina. It is a small to medium sized, deciduous tree that grows to about twelve to fifteen feet tall. It is hardy in USDA Zones 5 - 9. It may be planted in full sun in USDA Zones 5 - 8, but afternoon shade is recommended for plantings in USDA Zone 9.

'Hefner's Red' is noted for its heat tolerance. New leaves emerge as a bright red and fade to a darker, maroon color. It is known for its ability to retain its red color long into the season, even in hotter areas and those with full sun. Fall color is an attractive scarlet red.
