Celebrate the Gullah Geechee Junkanoo Festival at Brookgreen Gardens with a hands-on indigo dyeing experience inspired by one of the world’s oldest and most significant natural pigments.
Throughout the day, visitors are invited to participate in a community dye session using natural indigo to create their own blue-dyed cotton bandana. Indigo has deep cultural roots in West Africa and a significant history in the South Carolina Lowcountry, where the knowledge and labor of enslaved Africans contributed to its cultivation and production.
Participants will learn about the history and cultural significance of indigo, see a traditional dye vat in action, and dip their bandana into the vibrant dye bath. As the fabric meets the air, it will transform from green to deep indigo blue, creating a unique pattern with each piece.
This drop-in activity is part of Brookgreen Gardens’ Gullah Geechee Junkanoo Festival and celebrates the connections between African traditions, Lowcountry history, artistry, and cultural heritage.
Visitors of all ages are welcome to participate while supplies last.
