Sorghum bicolor 'Tarahumara Popping' fruiting habit

It has been our experience that Sorghum bicolor 'Tarahumara Popping' has performed well in a warm season planting. It has been observed to grow quickly in hot weather and appears to be somewhat drought tolerant. However, it does benefit from regular watering. Like other grasses and grains, it is disease and pest resistant.

When young, before seed heads begin to form, the plant can resemble a corn stalk. Seed heads mature in late summer to mid fall, and have a white seed head with a contrasting black seed at maturity, making it ornamental. Seeds may be eaten by birds, requiring harvests be done in a timely fashion. Unique to this cultivar, 'Tarahumara Popping' is grown for its seed head that can be popped like popcorn.
