Metasequoia glyptostroboides 'Ogon' was selected from among 28,000 seedlings in 1974 that had been irradiated with X-rays as seeds in Japan.

Metasequoia glyptostroboides 'Ogon' is also known as Metasequoia glyptostroboides 'Gold Rush', the name it was given when introduced into commerce in Europe. However, it is widely believed that M. glyptostroboides 'Ogon' is the correct name of the cultivar, with 'Gold Rush' functioning a trade name.
