Lespedeza thunbergii subsp. thunbergii 'Little Volcano' was found on the Ryukyu Islands in Japan by Akari Shibamichi. It was introduced to the United States by Ted Stephens of Nurseries Caroliniana in North Augusta, SC.

Lespedeza thunbergii subsp. thunbergii 'Little Volcano' is synoynmous with Lespedeza liukiuensis ‘Little Volcano’.
