Citrullus lanatus 'Royal Golden'
It has been our experience that Citrullus lanatus 'Royal Golden' performs very well in our area in a warm season planting. It benefits from fertilizing at the time of planting and consistent watering. Unique to the cultivar, 'Royal Golden' has yellow foliage and vines.
Fruit will start out green and slowly turn to yellow, appearing similar to a pumpkin, when ripe. Unlike many other cultivars, a full-yellow melon is indicative of a fully ripe melon. Additional cues for harvesting include watching for the tendril to turn black and allowing the pedicle of the vine to go darker near the melon-connection point, resulting in a higher sugar content. In our experience, only one large melon was produced per plant. The flesh was light pink in color, very sweet, and had large, round seeds.
Citrullus lanatus 'Royal Golden' is an heirloom and was developed from the "Pumpkin Rind" watermelon, which is now extinct.
