Citrullus lanatus 'Moon and Stars'
It has been our experience that Citrullus lanatus 'Moon and Stars' performs very well in a warm season planting. Fertilizing is necessary for success, and is best applied at the time of planting. It was found to be somewhat drought resistant when it matured, but ample water will lead to the best results. Unique to the cultivar, the foliage will have yellow spots on it that can appear to look like disease, but is in fact characteristic of 'Moon and Stars.'
The fruit is attractive, with a variety of yellow dots along the rind. It was found to produce well, creating multiple melons on a single plant, ranging in size from large melons to "personal-sized" melons that have a very sweet flavor and crisp flesh. Harvests are recommended after the tendril turns black. For added sugar content, allow the pedicle of the vine to go darker near the melon-connection point.
Citrullus lanatus 'Moon and Stars' is an heirloom watermelon that was introduced in 1926 by the Henderson Seed Company.
