Buzzing For Change

This project is more than just a piece of art; it's the heartbeat of a global hive, a beacon of education, and a testament to our commitment to all living creatures.

The Good of the Hive

Matt Willey is hand-painting 50,000 honeybees, the number in a healthy hive, in murals and installations worldwide. Brookgreen Gardens is proud to participate in this global art project to raise conservation awareness.

In March and April 2024, Matt will create a large-scale mural in Brookgreen Gardens’ “Conservation Station” adjacent to Red Wolf Ridge and our observational beehive. Matt's mural will celebrate these essential pollinators and represent all pollinators, emphasizing our interconnectedness with nature. It's a testament to the fact that, like bees in a hive, we all play a crucial role in the delicate balance of our ecosystem.

This project is more than just a piece of art; it’s the heartbeat of a global hive, a beacon of education, and a testament to our commitment to all living creatures. The mural will serve as an educational hub, connecting us all as vital members of the same hive. We believe that by raising awareness locally, we can create a ripple effect of change globally.

Conservation Matters

Our mission is rooted in the conservation and restoration of native plants, wildlife, history, and art. Across 9,100 acres of carefully managed land, we nurture natural habitats and woodlands, and we restore and preserve art and history. Our sanctuary is home to endangered species like the red wolves and the red-cockaded woodpecker. Did you know that the red-cockaded woodpecker relies on the longleaf pine ecosystem for survival? We manage 3,000 acres of this vital forest, employing controlled burns to maintain its fire-adapted ecosystem.
But that’s not all we do – we’re also guardians of the very water that sustains our local community. Every drop in Georgetown County is purified through our dedicated efforts.
