Thuja occidentalis 'Enlightened' was introduced by Dr. Clark West of Cincinnati, OH. He collected seeds from Thuja occidentalis 'Marissen's Sulphur' during a trip to England and selected 'Enlightened' from among those that germinated. Terri Park of Carmel, IN is responsible for naming and officially registering the cultivar with the Royal Horticultural Society.

It is an evergreen conifer that can grow to be about twelve feet tall to eight feet wide. It is hardy in USDA Zones 4 - 8 (at least), as we have observed it surviving without any problems at Brookgreen Gardens over the last several years. It has been our experience to have it in full sun, but we also believe it would do well in filtered or part shade.

This cultivar is known for its mint-green coloration with a lighter cream variegation.
