Lowcounty Zoo

Lowcountry Zoo
The native animals that live in the woods, swamps, and waters of the Lowcountry are being displaced by the rapidly growing population of our area. At the Lowcountry Zoo, you have the opportunity to see these animals in areas maintained as close as possible to their natural habitats.

The Lowcountry Zoo has been an important element of the mission for Brookgreen Gardens since its inception. It is the one of five institutions accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) in South Carolina. The AZA is America's most respected organization for zoos and aquariums. All of the native animals in the Lowcountry Zoo were either bred and raised in captivity, or have sustained a major disability due to injury. In either case, these animals could not survive in the wild.

Please note: Cypress Aviary at the Lowcountry Zoo will be closed on August 14 and 15 for maintenance.
