The Strength and Beauty of Composition, Balance and Design with Scott Rogers, NSS

Monday, March 26, 2018 to Friday, March 30, 2018

Campbell Sculpture Center

The class emphasis is on developing strength and beauty in a sculpture by adhering to classic art principles (design, anatomy, unifying geometric shapes, exaggeration, silhouette, negative space, focal points, textures, points of entry, and rhythm) make a piece “breathe”.  All levels of students are welcome.  The class includes group discussions on why pieces do or do not work, the use of quick sketches to develop the validity of a concept, building a solid armature, blocking/massing in a new work, and successfully bringing a piece to completion.  I have learned that a sculpture succeeds when based upon a foundation of artistic principles and fails when concern is placed on subject matter and detail.  Just as a composer uses the same piano as millions of others, how he combines the notes makes a masterful work uniquely his…..sculpting is no different.  Here is truth: “You can’t sculpt what you don’t know."  I look forward to sharing my knowledge so that you may enhance your artistic eye. Note: Students will begin new works in class and may also bring a work in progress for development.

$650 plus materials fee.
