Sculpting the Portrait and Figure in Clay with Peter Rubino

Monday, May 7, 2018 to Friday, May 11, 2018

Campbell Sculpture Center

Peter Rubino will lead you on a technical and artistic journey toward understanding the dynamic and creative forces in sculpting both the human portrait and figure in clay. Beginners are welcome.  The first two days will focus on following Peter Rubino’s step-by-step method of blocking in the foundation, developing hair mass, facial plane structure, and exploring dramatic expressions associated with the human head.  Days three, four, and five will concentrate on figure composition.  Students will learn how to “see in the round” to create a dynamic figure in pose using Peter’s principles: “Proportion, Position, and Planes”.  Lessons will also include studies of hands and feet, plus tooling and surface texture techniques.  Students will learn how to prepare their finished clay expressions for firing and how to apply a simple, hand-painted patina.  Peter encourages each student to discover their own personal artistic direction in his positive and upbeat teaching style: “We don't make mistakes, we make adjustments.”

Workshop fee is $650 plus materials and model fee.
