The Native Wildlife Zoo has been an important element of the mission for Brookgreen Gardens since its inception. It is the only zoo accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) on the coast of North and South Carolina. The AZA is America's most respected organization for zoos and aquariums. All of the native animals in the Lowcountry Zoo were either bred and raised in captivity or have sustained a major disability due to injury. In either case, these animals could not survive in the wild.
Here's a video of our newest exhibit "Flights of Passages". It has some beautiful and playful ducks.
Brookgreen Gardens is home to many wild species, including snakes and alligators. Please keep an eye out for our wildlife and remember, they are fun to look at but not to touch! .
On occasions we receive calls to rescue animals or for information on where to take injured animals. At Brookgreen Gardens, though we are considered to be an animal sanctuary, we can not go out and retrieve or rescue all the injured animals in the area. We take in ones that we think could have a future home with our collection. For your information, if an injured animals is found, ARK Animal Hospital in Surfside can treat wild animals. That is where we refer all injured animals. Below are some websites or contact numbers for other rehabilitation facilities in South Carolina that we have used in the past.
