Lowcountry History & Wildlife Preserve

The thousands of acres in Brookgreen's Lowcountry History and Wildlife Preserve are rich with evidence of the native plants and animals of the South Carolina Lowcountry as well as the great rice plantations of the 1800's. Explore these places through the programs at the Lowcountry Center by walking the Lowcountry Trail and by taking an excursion on our boat or overland vehicle deep into the Preserve.

The Palmetto Trust for Historic Preservation in partnership with the S.C. Department of Archives and History and the Governor’s Office awarded the 2011 Heritage Tourism Award to Brookgreen Gardens in recognition its historic interpretation of the Lowcountry Trail and the Oaks Plantation History and Nature Trail. Brookgreen Gardens was selected for the award by a panel of preservation professionals with the intent of recognizing outstanding examples of stewardship of the state’s historic resources and the significant contribution that historic preservation makes to the landscape and culture of the state. Criteria include: degree of difficulty of the project, obstacles that were overcome, impact in the community or state and best practices in the implementation of preservation technique.

At Brookgreen Gardens there are special events that take place throughout the year. If you would like to receive monthly e-news of these events, please click here. You may unsubscribe anytime and we never share your e-mail address.
