Rosa 'Thérèse Bugnet'
Rosa 'Thérèse Bugnet' was bred by Georges Bugnet in Canada and is a cross between a Rosa rugosa seedling and R. 'Betty Bland'. It is a hybrid rugosa rose.
At Brookgreen Gardens, we relocated our Rosa 'Thérèse Bugnet' from the Poetry Garden and to the outside of the Brown Scultpure Court, near the Arboretum. We found these roses to be very healthy in the location they were in, to the point that they grew taller than we anticipated, as well as sent out suckers throughout the garden bed. Flowering was found to be heaviest during the spring flush, or during the first major flowering of the year, and then sporadic flowering occurred during the remainder of the year. Their present location outside of the Brown Sculpture Court allows Rosa 'Thérèse Bugnet' to grow large and spread in an area that is less formal and better suited to its growth habit.
At Brookgreen Gardens, roses are rarely sprayed for fungal, insect, or other environmental pressures or problems. The Poetry Garden at Brookgreen Gardens is maintained as a completely spray-free rose garden, favoring the use of disease resistant roses and proper cultural practices.
