Arctotis stoechadifolia
It has been our experience that Arctotis stoechadifolia performs well in our area. At Brookgreen Gardens, we plant A. stoechadifolia as part of our cool season planting in the fall. We have observed disease problems following damage from a freeze; it is our recommendation that it be planted with some protection to help lessen disease and dieback issues. We have also found this to be a deer resistant plant, with deer showing no interest towards it.
When starting A. stoechadifolia from seed in the greenhouse, we found germination to be best when kept at room temperature in our headhouse with limited sun and with the potting media kept evenly moist.
A. stoechadifolia flowers in the early spring with light, powder-blue flowers and a bright yellow ring towards the center. We have noticed they may self seed, but not to the point of becoming aggressive, and can be easily removed by hand if not desired.
