What can I see at the Garden?Brookgreen has more than 300 acres of gardens and facilities that are open to the public. In addition there are excursions that take visitors to parts of Brookgreen more than 6,000 acres that are not generally open to the public. How old are the Live Oak Trees in the Oak Allee?The Live Oak Trees were planted in the 1700s and we estimate they are 250 years old. Many of the live oak limbs are topped with resurrection fern, a plant that appears dead during dry periods, but unfurls to become lush and green after rain. The largest oak on the property, (the Constitution Oak), has a circumference of 12 feet, a height of 66 feet, and a crown spread of 117 feet. It was one of two trees in SC designated a "living witness" to the time of the signing of the US Constitution during its bicentennial celebration in 1987. How many species of plants are in the Gardens?Brookgreen Gardens contains more than 2,000 species of plants, both natives and exotics that have been adapted to the climate. |
