New Butterfly House Open - October 31 Whispering Wings Butterfly Experience This seasonal exhibit features a lush garden filled with tropical plants where hundreds of butterflies soar through the air. Monarch, Zebra Longwing, Polydamas Swallowtails, Pipevine Swallowtails, Spicebush Swallowtails, Julias, Buckeyes, Queens, Painted Lady, and American Lady are just a few of the species that call Whispering Wings home. We will add dozens of other species throughout the summer and fall. All over the world, butterflies are valued for their beauty and currently inhabit every continent except Antarctica. Colorful, dainty creatures, butterflies belong to the Lepidoptera order of insects. They are cold-blooded and depend on the sun to regulate their temperature. They are essential pollinators in the garden and need nectar plants for adult butterflies, host plants to provide food and camouflage for caterpillars, and plants that provide shelter from wind and predators. Whispering Wings contains a pupae emergence room where visitors may observe the transformation from chrysalis to adult butterflies. Interpretive signs throughout the exhibit and benches provide a restful place to watch their delicate beauty in flight. The exhibit is open daily from 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Tickets are $3 - adults and $2 - children, for a 30 minute timed visit in addition to garden admission. “Gullah/Geechee mania!” Sculpture Exhibition
