New Butterfly House Opens at Brookgreen

April 1 - October 31

Whispering Wings Butterfly Experience

This seasonal exhibit features a lush garden filled with tropical plants where hundreds of butterflies soar through the air. Monarch, Zebra Longwing, Polydamas Swallowtails, Pipevine Swallowtails, Spicebush Swallowtails, Julias, Buckeyes, Queens, Painted Lady, and American Lady are just a few of the species that call Whispering Wings home. We will add dozens of other species throughout the summer and fall. All over the world, butterflies are valued for their beauty and currently inhabit every continent except Antarctica. Colorful, dainty creatures, butterflies belong to the Lepidoptera order of insects. They are cold-blooded and depend on the sun to regulate their temperature. They are essential pollinators in the garden and need nectar plants for adult butterflies, host plants to provide food and camouflage for caterpillars, and plants that provide shelter from wind and predators. Whispering Wings contains a pupae emergence room where visitors may observe the transformation from chrysalis to adult butterflies. Interpretive signs throughout the exhibit and benches provide a restful place to watch their delicate beauty in flight. The exhibit is open daily from 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Tickets are $3 - adults and $2 - children, for a 30 minute timed visit in addition to garden admission.

Sculpture Exhibitions
May 8 – July 25

Recent Acquisitions of Brookgreen Gardens (Noble Gallery)
In recent years, several hundred sculptures have been acquired for the Brookgreen collection. Received as gifts or purchased with donated funds from generous individuals, these works have broadened and strengthened the collection. Among the gifts are several from artists – their own works and the works of others – as well as from generous collectors that have remembered Brookgreen through bequests and other means. The exhibit includes selected works by Domenico Facci (1916-1994) and Gleb Derujinsky (1888-1975) as well as sculpture by contemporary artists Paul Moore, Walter Matia, Myra Weisgold, Janice Mauro, Marilyn Newmark, John Sisko, Rosie Sandifer, and a special group collected over 30 years by Sandy Scott.

Red, White, and Blue: American Sculpture for and by Veterans (Jennewein Gallery)
Several of the sculptures at Brookgreen Gardens have patriotic themes or were created as war memorials. Also, several of the artists represented in the collection served in the military or in a military support job in wartime, especially during World Wars I and II. The exhibit will be on view during Brookgreen’s annual “Red, White, and Blue Salute to Veterans” event where flags are placed at appropriately-themed outdoor sculptures.
