Fabric Art Exhibit
The Fabric of a People: African-American Art, Experiences and Contributions, an educational exhibit will be offered by Zelda Grant, author and a self-taught fabric artist with an exceptional eye for colors, textures and designs. The exhibit will be open daily from noon – 4:30 p.m. in Learning Lab I at the Wall Lowcountry Center and is free with garden admission. View a video preview of the exhibit here.
Silent Cities
Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday
Travel on the Trekker down back roads and explore some of the cemeteries, the Silent Cities at Brookgreen. Walk through former slaves and plantation owners’ graveyards and hear about the historical burial customs of European and African origin. This is a two-hour excursion. Tickets are $15 in addition to garden admission and must be purchased at Keepsakes at least 10 minutes prior to departure time. Reservations are suggested, please call (843) 235-6042. In February and March, the excursions are offered at 10 a.m. and at 12 noon. Visitors who purchase tickets for this excursion will receive a special discount coupon for same-day purchases at Keepsakes.
O, FREEDOM OVA ME!
Wednesday, January 13 – March 3
Ron Daise, Brookgreen’s Vice President for Creative Education, presents a program at 1 p.m. in the Wall Lowcountry Center Auditorium of selected readings, songs and photographs from his book Gullah Branches, West African Roots. Following the themes of “Home,” “Horror,” “Heritage,” “Hope”, Daise informs about the journey of enslaved Africans to Gullah communities and about Gullah culture in a spellbinding and participatory presentation. Program is free with garden admission and is not available: February 3 and 10.
The Oaks Plantation History and Nature Trail
Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday
Through interpretive panels along this natural walking trail visitors learn about the story of The Oaks Plantation and see archaeological sites that include the plantation owner and slave areas. Transportation to The Oaks Plantation History and Nature Trail is only by mini-bus which departs on the hour from 12 noon until 3 p.m.. Tickets are $3 per person and must be purchased at Keepsakes at least 10 minutes prior to departure time. Visitors who purchase tickets for this excursion will receive a special discount coupon for same-day purchases at Keepsakes.
Children's Discovery Room
Saturday and Sunday
From noon to 4:30 p.m., the Children's Discovery Room features seven interactive stations for children ages 4 – 12 that afford opportunities to learn about the rich history, nature, and art at Brookgreen Gardens. Free with garden admission.
Theodosia Trunk Show at Keepsakes
Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, so join us on Saturday, February 6, from 12 - 5 p.m. when we will feature jewelry designed and handcrafted by Charleston artist, Jenny Thompson; these pieces are truly one of a kind. Take advantage of this opportunity to speak with the artist and try on the various styles.

Meet friends and treat yourself to a Winter Tea served Saturdays and Sundays at 3:30 p.m. in the Pavilion Restaurant during February. Brookgreen Partners with the 2010 Southeastern Wildlife Exposition
February 10-14
Building upon last year ’s participation, Brookgreen once again will join with the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition, February 10-14 in Charleston, SC to display 10 historic animal sculptures from the Brookgreen collection and 12 historic and contemporary sculptures borrowed from artists and dealers that will be for sale to the public. Our display “Collector’s Corner”, will be in the ballroom of Charleston Place Hotel. Robin Salmon will give a lecture on February 13, Animal Sculpture in America, at 2:00 p.m. in the auditorium of the Charleston County Library across from Gaillard Auditorium. Black History Month Performance
Saturday, February 13
For Black History Month observance, the Education Department will present The Healing Force, a four-member performance troupe from Winston-Salem, NC, that offers a lively celebration of Africa with stories and songs, on Saturday, February 13, at 1:00 p.m., in the Wall Lowcountry Center Auditorium. The program is free with garden admission. A special cultural menu in the Pavilion Restaurant will be offered the day of the performance.
St. Valentine's Lunch Special
Sunday, February 14
Bring your sweetheart to the Pavilion Restaurant for a special luncheon of beef tenderloin, marinated and grilled to perfection with a red wine reduction. Served with wild rice pilaf, steamed vegetables and a delectable dessert. 18.00
Sculpture Exhibitions
Anna Hyatt Huntington: A Collecting Eye (Jennewein Gallery) This exhibit presents works acquired by the Huntingtons for Brookgreen Gardens through the decade of the 1930s. Many, including some of Brookgreen’s finest works, were selected personally by Anna Hyatt Huntington. The exhibit showcases sculpture by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Harriet Frishmuth, Janet Scudder, A. A. Weinman, Paul Jennewein, Paul Manship, Malvina Hoffman, and other important late 19th and early 20th century sculptors. This is the fifth in a series of exhibits on Anna Hyatt Huntington’s life and art sponsored by the Friends of Brookgreen Gardens.
A Taste of Ambrosia: Mythology in Sculpture (Noble Gallery)
Images of nymphs, fauns, and pagan gods and goddesses abound in American art. Not surprisingly, the Brookgreen sculpture collection includes numerous works depicting themes of Greek and Roman mythology. A Taste of Ambrosia presents versions of Diana, Pan, and a host of other deities from myths of the ancient past.
Daffodil Days
Late February-Early March
Daffodil Days, makes an unprecedented visual display before the peak spring blooming season and provides another reason to visit Brookgreen Gardens in the winter! Several hundred thousand daffodils and other spring flowers provides vistas of color from late winter until early spring.
