'Cool Summer Evenings' Open until 9 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays - June 17 through August 14

There is something for everyone during Cool Summer Evenings with cruises down the creek at 5:30 and 6:30 p.m., the Lowcountry Zoo is open until 7 p.m., the new otter exhibit, new lighting in the gardens, live entertainment and cool summer suppers in the Pavilion Restaurant! During Cool Summer Evenings on Thursdays in the Pavilion Restaurant receive a 50% discount off a kid’s meal with the purchase of an adult meal.

Entertainment is FREE with garden admission. Creek excursions on The Springfield, pontoon boat, are an additional $7 per person.

Please remember to bring your own blanket or chair for the performances!

Picnics are allowed only in the designated picnic area located just south of the Jessamine Pond and are not allowed in other areas of the Gardens.

Beverage carts with soft drinks, water, beer, and wine are available for purchase at the performance locations. No alcoholic beverage from the outside may be brought in.

Open Studio” in July
Each Tuesday and Thursday during the month of July, the Holmes Studio in the Campbell Center of American Sculpture will be open at 11:00 a.m. and at 2:00 p.m. for a special program introducing visitors to the elements of sculpture. During the hour-long program, sculpture staff will use clay, plaster, and wax models, molds, audio-visual presentations, and printed handouts to explain how sculpture is made. Free with garden admission.


"Gullah/Geechee Rhythms"

June 10-Septemeber 2
On Wednesday, at 1 p.m. in the Wall Lowcountry Center Auditorium throughout the summer Gullah performer, author, and historian Ron Daise will use audience-participation in singing and storytelling to identify ten memorable ways to recall the importance and significance of Gullah/Geechee heritage. Pictures, music, personal reflections, and lecture are interwoven throughout stanzas to the tune of a well-known Gullah coded message song. “Dats Right, I Am a Gullah!” is a joyful song in the call-and-response tradition that affirms and reinforces the history of Gullah culture. The program is free with garden admission.

Gullah “Make n Take” Day

Thursday, July 2
During this premiere program of the Education Department’s “Children’s Seasonal Activity Day ” program series, 4- to 12-year-olds will participate in five “make and take” stations that emphasize Gullah heritage, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Learning Lab I of the Wall Lowcountry Center. Free with garden admission.

Upstate SculpTOUR

Brookgreen Gardens presents 20 works from its world-renowned sculpture collection to audiences in the South Carolina Upstate. The long term exhibit entitled Brookgreen Gardens’ Upstate SculpTOUR will open to the public at Converse College, Wofford College and Chapman Cultural Center in Spartanburg, SC  from September 21, 2008 through August 16, 2009. National Sculpture Society 76th Annual Awards Exhibition
Once again, the National Sculpture Society’s premier awards exhibition travels to Brookgreen Gardens. This juried show includes the work of 42 prominent sculptors from across the country, including 15 prize-winning works and will be on display in the Noble and Jennewein Galleries. During the course of the exhibit, visitors will be able to vote for their favorite sculptures to win Brookgreen Gardens’ People’s Choice Award. Announcement of the winner is made during a celebration on August 22.The exhibition is free with regular garden admission.

Camp Brookgreen

With an emphasis on animals, Camp Brookgreen 2009 will host one-week sessions @ $160.00 for members and $185.00 for non-members. Summer fun and educational enrichment will include activities at Brookgreen Gardens and Huntington Beach State Park, storytelling, arts and crafts, and a boat ride along freshwater creeks and rivers. Sessions for rising 2nd and 3rd graders will be June 8-12, 15-19, and 22-26. Sessions for rising 4th and 5th graders will be July 6-10 and 13-17.
