Things to know about flowers:
Flowers did not always exist! Can you imagine a world without them?
Here are some flower facts to know:
Flowers first appeared 140 million years ago. Before that the world was covered in ferns and cone-bearing trees.
A long time ago in Holland, tulips were more valuable than gold!
Broccoli is a flower that has not bloomed yet. If it were left to grow, it would produce little yellow flowers.
Some flowering plants such as orchids and Spanish moss (yes, Spanish moss has flowers!) don’t need soil to grow. They get all their nutrients from the air.
Some plants such as sunflowers produce a toxic substance that kill other plants that grow around them.
Fruits and vegetables start out as flowers! The apple you eat in the fall was a pretty white flower in the spring. The pumpkins you get in the fall for Halloween started as a horn shaped yellow flower that grows on a vine.
What is your favorite fruit or vegetable? I bet it was once a flower!
Materials to make your own flower:
Construction paper
Tape and glue
Marker
Procedure:
- Cut 6-inch stripes out of construction paper.
- Cut a two-and-a-half-inch circle for the middle.
- Bend your strips in half and glue them to the back of the yellow circle until you have gone all around.
- You can add a stem by rolling a piece of green construction paper into a small tube and add leaves.
Use your imagination and make different color flowers. Or make thinner strips and double them up for a different look.
If you would like, add a happy face to your flowers and put them in a dry vase! Paper flowers don’t need water!
