"Black Panther" by Anna Hyatt Huntington
When the 353rd Fighter Squadron of the United States Air Force was deactivated, "Black Panther", a gift from Anna Hyatt Huntington to the squadron in 1958, was given to Brookgreen Gardens for safekeeping. Brookgreen was to keep the sculpture under the understanding that if the squadron was ever reactivated, it would be returned. In 1994, Commander Thomas J. Koch of the USAF contacted Brookgreen Gardens, informed them of the squadron's reactivation and requested that "Black Panther" be returned. Brookgreen honored this request and the sculpture was returned to the squadron on October 25, 1994. It was sent to Eileson Air Force base, Fairbanks, Alaska, where the squadron was deployed.
