"Theodosia Burr Alston" by Robert A. Weinman; Brookgreen Gardens Medal 75-76
Medal/Theodosia Burr Alston
"The obverse contains a profile portrait of Theodosia adapted from the portrait by John Vanderlyn that is now at the Yale University Art Gallery. To the left of the profile is her name, Theodosia Burr Alston, and to the right are her dates 1783-1813. The words, Brookgreen and Gardens, appear at the top and bottom of the design. On the reverse, a pair of winged cherubs supporting a wreath frame a history of Theodosia's brief life: 'Born in Albany, New York. Married to Joseph Alston in 1801. His plantation "The Oaks" is now a part of Brookgreen Gardens. Lost at Sea.'" (Salmon 269) |
