"Little Lamb" by Gertrude Katherine Lathrop
Animal/sheep/lamb/awkward/tender
Silver Plated Bronze
" A newborn lamb is standing with its head lowered and ears down, presenting an engaging portrait of vulnerability and gentleness. The sculptor has realistically depicted the animals woolly coat in a pattern of textured nubs. When exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1936, this work received the Speyer Prize. In 1937 it was awarded the Crowninshield Prize at the Stockbridge Art Exhibition. This example was cast in 1972 for Brookgreen Gardens by Roman Bronze Works. Gertrude Lathrop wrote, 'The subject of my model was a cosset lamb that my sister brought home on her lap. My sister's book, "Bouncing Betty", also used this lamb as a subject. Our animals usually posed for both of us and in this case did triple duty as my mother, who was a painter, painted her picture standing in a flower bed.' " ("Brookgreen Gardens Sculpture Volume II", Robin R. Salmon, Brookgreen Gardens). |
