| Description |
"Head of Nero" by Gutzon Borglum
Head/male/Roman/madness/terror
"Wildly staring eyes and parted lips give Nero an expression of terror and madness. The heavy face above a short, thick neck is sketchily modeled, the sagging fleshy masses of the cheeks and the drawn brows briefly indicated. A laurel wreath has slipped askew over one ear. The sculptor has concentrated on giving the effect of intense emotion, boring the eyes deeply to make burning black holes beside the thin nose and opening another spot of deep shadow between the narrow, slack lips..." ("Brookgreen Gardens Sculpture, Beatrice Gilman Proske, 1968")
