| Description |
"Iris" by Paul Jennewein
Figure/female/nude/myth/rainbow
"Iris, goddess of the rainbow and messenger from gods to men, is represented as a girl swiftly descending, her body bent backward in an arc. Both arms are raised, palms inward, and the legs are pressed together. The forms are firm, with flowing surfaces. Classic features are softly modeled, and the hair is brushed back from the face in loose curls. In small size the work was completed in 1938; the following year it was enlarged with some variations for use as a garden statue. The plaster cast of the large version has been presented to the American Academy of Arts and Letters." ("Brookgreen Gardens Sculpture, Beatrice Gilman Proske, 1968). |
