"The Sun Vow" by Hermon Atkins MacNeil
Figure/Indian/old man/boy/warrior
"An old [Native American] is seated on a skin thrown over a rock. He watches the flight of an arrow which a boy standing by his side has just loosed from a bow aimed upward. A feather headdress lies on the old [Native American's] knees. This ceremony was in use among the Sioux for testing the prowess of their young men. If the youth, aiming directly at the sun, shot straight and far enough so that his arrow was lost from sight, he qualified as a warrior. ("Brookgreen Gardens Sculpture", Beatrice Gilman Proske, 1968).
