"Jaguar" by Anna Hyatt Huntington
Animal/feline/jaguar
"A jaguar is crouching on a rock, his hind legs gathered under him, his forepaws and head bent over the edge of the rock as he gazes downward. It was modeled in 1907 at Auvers-sur-Oise as a companion piece to the 'Reaching Jaguar'[1932.007]. Bothe these statues [sculptures] are studies of Senor Lopez, a jaguar from Paraguay aquired by the New York Zoological Society in 1902, whose 'great size, graceful proportions, and...ferocity...are almost legendary among the staff of the Zoological Park even today.' " ("Brookgreen gardens Sculpture, Beatrice Gilman Proske, 1968).
