Katharine Lane Weems
Died 1989, Manchester, MA
Making animal sculpture her specialty, Katharine Lane Weems portrayed greyhounds, whippets, horses, and exotic animals. Her early work displayed a flair for design; later pieces were simplified without sacrificing detail. Greyhounds Unleashed, a pair of greyhounds racing side by side, is an example of Weems’s eye for composition and her distinctive style. The lean canine nervousness and rapid forward movement are elegantly and gracefully depicted.
