Sensing Nature
Grades K and 1

The children will take a walk along the Lowcountry Trail and using touch, sight, hearing and smell they will experience nature. They will also discuss and observe the living and non-living things they see.

Growing Up Green

Grade 1

Myrtle Beach outdoor activitiesStudents will begin by observing a variety of trees and identifying some of their basic parts. They will visit the greenhouses here at Brookgreen if they are available and discuss the essentials necessary for all plants to live. If the greenhouses are not available, they will talk about and look at some edible plants, and the students will make and take a Baggie Greenhouse.

Nature Signs & Shapes
Grades K-2

Students will look for and identify animal homes and signs they find in nature. These may include nests, woodpecker holes, chewed leaves, and insect galls. Students also will identify basic shapes commonly found in nature.

Whispering Wings Butterfly Program Grades K and 2, 3, and 4-12

Students will learn fun and interesting facts about butterflies. After this introduction, students will take a stroll through the butterfly exhibit, observing butterflies in the adult and pupa stages. Be sure to bring cameras to take home memories of nearly a thousand “Whispering Wings” found there.

Animal Detectives

Grades 2 and 3

brookgreen gardens myrtle beach scStudents will use tools a detective would use to investigate a mystery, thus helping them to gather information about the lives of some of the animals here in our area. The tools are specific questions, such as: “Where does this animal live?” “What does it eat?” and “How has it adapted to its habitat?” They will discuss the basic needs of all animals and observe skulls and live animals from several of the habitats here at Brookgreen Gardens.

Where’s Lunch?

The class will start by discussing producers, consumers, and decomposers. They will observe and discuss some of the animals here at Brookgreen Gardens and focus on their individual characteristics, their needs, what adaptations nature has provided them with to survive, and then how they fit into their environment’s food chain.

Where the Trees Grow
Grades 5 and 7

Through two outdoor programs the students will become familiar with the anatomy of two of the forests here at Brookgreen Gardens: 1) Walking through the Upland Forest and the Cypress Swamp ecosystems, the students will compare and notate on a Venn diagram the different species of both plant and animals in these two forested areas; and 2) The students will be introduced to a forest profile. Along with observing the layers of a forest and tree cross sections, the students will observe the horizons and soil composition that makes up the forest floor. Teachers must bring Clip Boards and Pencils for each student.

Upland Forest and Cypress Swamp Ecology Walk

Grades 4, 5, & 7
$2 Per Student and Extra Adult

Walking through the upland forest and cypress swamp ecosystems, the students will observe and compare the characteristics of both areas which will include their populations and the living and nonliving components of each. At the end of the walk, they will discuss and then notate their findings on a Vinn diagram. Teachers will need to bring pencils and clipboards for all students.

Keying Out Brookgreen Trees

Grades 6, 7 & 8

Students will learn the arrangement and process of using a dichotomous key. They will be directed to trees located around the Wall Lowcountry Center and using the dichotomous keys given them, they will be able to identify many of the types of trees growing there.

Circle of Lifemyrtle beach sc gardens

Grade 7

Students will discuss biotic factors in an environment (organisms, populations, communities and ecosystems) and then define the abiotic factors (sunlight, water, air, and soil). They will then observe producers, consumers and decomposers and see how they fit into the food chains. Observing live animals here at Brookgreen, students will be informed about those that are predators and those that are prey.

Plantation and Native Animals: History and Habitats

All Grades

Myrtle Beach outdoor activities Students will meet the historic domestic animals that were an integral part of plantation life in the early 1700s. Students then will be guided through the habitats of native animals, such as alligators, river otters, foxes, and birds of prey.
