Stretching and Growing: Children on Lowcountry Rice Plantations

Grades 3-12

Students will explore the history, culture, and lifestyles of the ethnic groups that lived at Brookgreen Plantation during the Rice Era. While walking along “The Lowcountry Trail,” an outdoor museum of four one-of-a-kind stainless steel sculptures and archeological sites, students will learn about being children of the Plantation Owner, the Overseer, the Enslaved African Male, and the Enslaved African Female.

Creek Excursion

Grades 3-12
$4 for Grades 3-6; $7 for Grades 4-12 and All Adults

Explore the remnants of some of South Carolina’s most important rice plantations on Brookgreen’s pontoon boat, The Springfield. This program emphasizes the history of South Carolina’s rice culture and its impact on the Lowcountry region. Students will observe native plants and animals in secluded habitats. Each program will include key concepts from the South Carolina Social Studies Standards for the grade level.

Only the registered number of students/adults scheduled by noon of the day prior to a field trip will be allowed on the boat. No boat tickets can be purchased on the program date for the 10 am and 12 pm programs, even if the boat is not filled. Adults/Chaperones who are Members of Brookgreen must comply with the School Field Trip policies and be included in the final count for attendance and costs for all programs and creek excursions.

Rice Plantation Exploration

Grade 3, 4, 6, 7, 8

Students will learn about the history of our area’s rice plantations by visiting three exhibit areas in the Wall Lowcountry Center. In the “Lowcountry Change & Continuity” exhibit, they will observe Native American and Gullah artifacts and an aerial view of Georgetown County’s 45,000 abandoned rice fields. In the “Cultural Garden”, they will view our Horticultural Department’s exhibit of plants and herbs used in plantation kitchens, and our Rice Trunk model at the dock will introduce students to the transformation of the cypress swamps that produced the rice culture.
