Wednesday Evening Historical Dramas

Murrells Inlet has some of the most colorful and eventful history in the South and this summer Brookgreen will present two historical plays written by the talented local playwright, Lori Lewis, and produced and directed by Brookgreen’s Vice President of Development, Pat Tukey.

A Carolina Pirate: Anne Bonney and Company, will be presented at 7:00 p.m. in the Live Oak Alleé on Wednesday evenings, June 17 through July 15. This play tells the story of the high-spirited adventures of pirates Anne Bonney, Mary Reed and “Calico Jack” Rackham, who roamed the waters of present day Murrells Inlet. Anne Bonney and Mary Read are the most famous women pirates in history, and they are the only ones known to have pursued their trade in the Western Hemisphere. Their fellow crew members knew that -- in times of action -- no one else was as ruthless and bloodthirsty as these two women. Captain Jack, nicknamed "Calico Jack" for his love of colorful cotton clothing, was a well-known pirate in those days, but his reputation has survived through the ages primarily because of these two infamous women members of his crew.       On Wednesday evenings, July 22 through August 12, the play, The Legend of Alice Flagg, will be presented at 7:00 p.m., also in the Live Oak Alleé. Probably no ghost story or legend exists among these oaks as long-lived and tragic as the story of Alice Flagg. It is a tale of forbidden love, family secrets, and the social structure of those who lived here more than 150 years ago. Much of the language, sentences and phrasing were borrowed from 1849 editions of the local newspaper, Winyah Observer, made available by courtesy from the Georgetown Library archives.
