Children's Discovery Room

Imaginative, exploratory, and playful, Brookgreen’s “Children’s Discovery Room” is unlike any other hands-on children’s center in Georgetown and Horry Counties.
When children and parents visit seven exciting activity stations will greet them. Every one of the discovery stations has something to do with an aspect of Brookgreen heritage and history.
Each station has written or pictorial instructions to foster independent involvement, with minimal help from parents. At some stations, children complete projects they may carry home with them.

  • Trees are Tree-mendous has an authentic stump relays information about events that occurred in the life of a tree by reading its rings. Children may creatively build with natural wood blocks to make and take home their own tree disc necklace.
  • Dig Into the Past encourages children to experience how it feels to be an archeologist. Pictures of archeological digs at Brookgreen Gardens will frame the walls around a large, oblong box, at which children will stand and sift through sand to uncover pottery chards and arrowheads, and animal skulls and bones found at Brookgreen Gardens.
  • Color Gullah History, a coloring station, affords children opportunity to see pictures that reflect Gullah heritage.
  • At Rubbing Off Nature, children do rubbings onto paper of a variety of nature objects such as barks and leaves. Kids may take their completed rubbing home with them.
  • Set in front of a picture of Anna Hyatt Huntington and a horse she has sculpted, Sculpture Studio allows children to create their own sculpture or observe a series of pictures that shows them how to make a specific one.
  • Magnifying Nature enables children to view enlargements of a variety of seasonal nature items.
  • Picture This offers two substations. At one, kids color cardboard mattes using stencils of flowers that grow at Brookgreen. At the other, they stand behind an enlarged photo of two sculptures at Brookgreen designed with a hole in which children pose their faces. Parents may frame the photos they take of their children with the children’s own uniquely designed mattes and must use their own cameras.
