“Dirt & Worms” and “Gullah Gullah Days”, our two annual curriculum-based programs for Georgetown and Horry County school students, are offered free-of-charge through sponsorships:

“Dirt & Worms” introduces third and fourth graders to the soils and soil components of our area. The outdoor class will visit two Brookgreen habitats. The inside class will learn about one of the decomposers--the earthworm--through observing and making earthworm terrariums that will be taken back to the school classroom. All supplies will be furnished.
Program Dates: October 3-7, 10-14, 18-19 and 24-28, 2011
Program Times: 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Registration: On a first-come, first-served basis, beginning September 6, 2011
Available to 50 students per day ( 25 per class)

“Gullah Gullah Days” offers third graders educational activities about Gullah culture. Students will learn about Gullah history, heritage, and lore through walking along “The Lowcountry Trail”, visiting the Map Room that shows an aerial view of Georgetown County’s abandoned rice fields, observing a rice trunk model, eating cultural snacks, and participating in a make-and-take activity. The program is funded by the Falk-Griffin Foundation.
Program Dates: January 30 – February 3 and February 6-10, 2012
Program Times: 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Registration: On a first-come, first-served basis, beginning September 6, 2011
Available to 200 students per day

Where the Trees Grow
Grades 5 and 7

Through two outdoor programs the students will become familiar with the anatomy of two of the forests here at Brookgreen Gardens: 1) Walking through the Upland Forest and the Cypress Swamp ecosystems, the students will compare and notate on a Venn diagram the different species of both plant and animals in these two forested areas; and 2) The students will be introduced to a forest profile. Along with observing the layers of a forest and tree cross sections, the students will observe the horizons and soil composition that makes up the forest floor. Teachers must bring Clip Boards and Pencils for each student.
Time: 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. ( 2-hour program)
